Understanding Depression

Sadness is a very common emotion and something we all normally experience.  Again, sadness and grief are normal, especially when dealing with difficult times in life.  Most often, they will typically pass with a little tincture of time.  However, when a person has depression, it affects their daily life so severely that they often can’t go to work or function for an extended period of time.  Often, a tincture of time does not make things better.  Doctors refer to this condition as “Depressive Disorder,” “Major Depression,” “Major Depressive Disorder,” or “Clinical Depression.”  There are a few different types of depression including major depressive disorder, depression associated with pregnancy or after delivery, dysthymia and seasonal affective disorder (SAD) for example.  Depression is a real illness and is by no means a sign of one’s character.  If diagnosed with clinical depression, most people will need treatment to get better.

Diagnosing and Treating Depression

During an online video session on Psychiatry.Live, the psychiatric provider will ask you a series of targeted question about your symptoms, your medical history and your family history.  He/she may ask you to fill out a questionnaire or have you do some medical tests to help uncover any underlying condition that may be causing your symptoms like nutrient deficiencies, thyroid problems or hormone imbalance.

Once a diagnosis has been made, your clinician will develop a treatment plan that will help transform the quality of your life.

Our clinicians take a holistic approach to the treatment plan that may include talk therapy, sleep management, nutrition and exercise alongside prescribed medication.
